Do Toenail Fungus Treatments Really Work?
By Emory Crider
Toenail fungus is one of those diseases that people are constantly trying to avoid. This isn’t without good reason because once the fungus penetrates the nail barrier and reaches the depths of the nail bed, it can be almost impossible to reach, let alone rid. However, that doesn’t mean the infection is entirely incurable; let’s look at a few of the most common toenail fungus treatment options.

Tea Tree Oil

Oil extracted from tea leaves is one of the most recommend household remedies for toenail fungus infections. However, there seems to be little scientific evidence to back the efficacy of this substance. Although tea tree oil has been proven effective for cuts, chapped skin and burns in the past, people have recently begun to report success using it on toenail fungus. In addition to tea tree oil, other essential oils and extracts from grape seeds can also be combined for better results.

Vicks VapoRub

Vicks VapoRub, although not intended as a fungicide, has been advocated by many as an effective solution for toenail fungus. While it’s possible that infections in the initial stage may respond to this form of treatment, those in advanced stages will need more aggressive medication.

Topical Ointments

Topical ointments and fungicidal creams are the most commonly prescribed solutions in toenail fungus treatment. Take care, however, that you

don’t rely on these entirely unless the infection is mild. Ointments will only serve to ease conditions in the toe and help prevent the infection from recurring.

Oral Pills

Orally ingestible pills are prescribed only to patients with extreme infections. In such cases the nail might be completely destroyed and the fungus could threaten other toes. However, prescription pills are usually pricey and are sometimes accompanied by harmful side effects including vomiting, fainting, diarrhea, headaches, and functional disturbances in the liver and kidney. If you’re already on prescription for another disease, your doctor must be notified of this so as to prevent drug interactions.

Nail Removal

If your doctor determines that the toenail fungus is beyond control, he/she may suggest a nail removal to reach the infection. If the removal operation is conducted non-surgically, the nail will be made to soften with the application of creams and then dissolved. The remaining debris will then be removed and antifungal cream will be administered directly on the fungus.

If the removal is surgical, local incisions must be made and the nail removed as is. As with the nonsurgical process, ointments will then be applied to the infection; this process can be painful.

In either case, a new nail will grow to replace the removed nail and could take up to one year.
